Senior Accountant – Project Accounting

Department: Accounting Operations
Location ASTHO HQ

Summary: The Senior Accountant is responsible for compiling, analyzing, and summarizing the financial performance of programs, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with grant and organizational requirements. This role collaborates closely with Accounting, Grants Administration, and Program Operations to maximize revenue opportunities and optimize financial outcomes in alignment with budgetary goals. The ideal candidate will provide key financial insights, support decision-making, and enhance financial efficiency across the organization.

Location: Remote

Anticipated salary: $84,500 Extended experience: up to $95,500 if experience exceeds expectations

Principal Functions:

  • Prepare and maintain monthly financial analysis to assess program performance and ensure accurate reporting
  • Perform end-to-end grant reconciliations, tracking financial activity from inception to closure to ensure compliance with grant terms
  • Support revenue forecasting and annual budget planning, providing financial insights to inform strategic decisions
  • Support month-end close activities, including revenue and expense accruals, reconciliations, and variance analysis
  • Conduct in-depth operational financial analysis, evaluating project costs, performance trends, and profitability to support decision-making
  • Collaborate with Program Operations teams to develop cost estimates, monitor project expenditures, and identify variances, recommending corrective actions as needed
  • Assist in the Treasury Management process, ensuring proper cash flow planning and compliance with financial policies
  • Serve as a key liaison between Accounting, Program Operations, and Grants Administration, fostering cross-functional collaboration and financial transparency
  • Utilize and become a subject matter expert in JAMIS ERP system, extracting and analyzing financial data for reporting and decision support
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP
  • Assist in the preparation of the monthly financial statement and year-end audit
  • Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in accounting with 3+ analyzing program financial results
  • Minimum 4 years working for a non-profit
  • Demonstrated proficiency in quantitative analysis, financial modeling, continuous improvement, and project management
  • Knowledge of GAAP Financial Principles
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in financial modeling and analyses
  • Detail oriented and highly organized
  • Skilled in time management and the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Solid understanding of Grant Accounting and Compliance with Agreements
  • Strong Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint skills
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel Skills (Pivots, VLookup, etc…)
  • Strong partnering and teamwork skills; and professional and positive “can do” attitude
  • Excellent communication (verbal & written) skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to meet deadlines, handle multiple priorities and perform job responsibilities accurately while working in a fast paced and vibrant environment
