Summary: The Island Support Team supports initiatives across ASTHO’s portfolio on a wide variety of public health topics with a focus on the Island Areas. The Team coordinates ASTHO’s projects and activities to meet the specialized needs of public health agencies in the Atlantic and the Pacific, and ensures alignment with ASTHO’s strategic priorities. The Director of Island Support will play an integral role in the implementation of the Island Support core functions: 1) facilitate coordination across ASTHO projects and activities within projects focused on the Island Areas (IA); 2) ensure that projects meet the specialized needs of member jurisdictions in the Pacific and the Atlantic; 3) ensure projects are aligned with strategic priorities; 4) ensure that they work towards an articulated overall strategy for agency and regional improvement; and 5) increase focus and resources in these areas. The director will also lead efforts to assist programs across the organization with project deliverables, technical assistance, and capacity building for federally funded projects of value to territorial and freely associated state health officials. This position requires proven research, technical assistance, and analytical capabilities related to health equity, community engagement, the social determinants of health, and their impact on community health and well-being.
Location: Remote
Anticipated salary: $94,500 Extended experience: up to $111,000 if experience exceeds expectations
Principal Functions:
- Manages project activities and deliverables across multiple projects within the Island Support portfolio. This includes developing and managing budgets; tracking and leading the creation of grant deliverables; and maintaining relationships with funders and partners.
- Responsible for the daily management, work assignments, and continual coaching and professional development of Island Support teammates and the technical assistance and other work they lead for ASTHO projects and strategic planning and alignment of projects across ASTHO.
- Empowers staff to innovate and provides leadership opportunities for Island Support on Island Area projects and activities within projects.
- Promotes a spirit of collaboration and fosters team spirit within the team and across ASTHO.
- Identifies needed actions in a proactive manner and notifies responsible parties. Provides leadership on decisions concerning approaches that balance member and funder needs, and that fit within budget constraints.
- Uses independent judgement in information gathering and application to evaluate problems and identify solutions.
- Oversees the tracking and analysis of emerging policies and issues of importance to the Island Areas at the jurisdictional and federal levels.
- Serves as lead on island health equity projects and technical assistance. Tracks, facilitates, and routes appropriate communication and coordination between internal and external stakeholders.
- Possesses, acquires, and maintains the expertise needed to direct Island Support work effectively, including a high level of subject matter expertise to island health officials, public health agency staff, and stakeholders on health equity, population health, social determinants of health, community-based public health, and other related areas
- Brings problem-solving expertise to the job each day, applying seasoned professional judgement.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in public health or related field, Master’s degree preferred.
- 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Strong project management skills to oversee multiple simultaneous deliverables and meet deadlines
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate tactfully and diplomatically with external and internal contacts
- Interest in supporting staff and team development
- Experience working for a membership association and/or government officials preferred
- Understanding of public health functions, systems, and infrastructure
- Interest and knowledge in population health, health equity, and health disparities
- Knowledge of public health systems change desirable
- Understanding, sensitivity, and appreciation for cultural humility and inclusiveness
- Excellent analytical skills and written and oral communication skills
- Ability to develop and maintain working relationships and collaborative networks to coordinate ASTHO programs and activities with other staff members and government organizations
- Ability to develop project measures of success, analyze progress, evaluate outcomes, and forecast needs
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications and webinar platforms and the ability to learn new software
- Ability to participate in calls after normal business hours with project participants in the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% of the time
