Senior Analyst, Social and Behavioral Health

Department: SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
Location: Arlington, VA

SummaryThe Senior Analyst, Social and Behavioral Health will collaborate with other programmatic and cross-cutting teams at ASTHO, including the State Health Policy team, to help lead the development of project deliverables for federally funded projects important to state/territorial health officials and health agencies in the areas of unintended injury, social and behavioral health issues and health policy.

Principal Functions:

  • Lead the development of in-depth reports, state stories, issue briefs, newsletters, and articles for publication.
  • Responds to requests for assistance and information from members, affiliates, and national organizations.
  • Serves as an information and policy resource on injury prevention, behavioral health, overdose prevention and surveillance, and other related areas.
  • Collaborates with the State Health Policy team to develop capacity building and technical assistance to state and territorial health agencies analyzing and implementing policy to prevent overdose.
  • Project management for events and deliverables, including meeting planning, and other administrative tasks necessary to support project deliverables.
  • Collaborates with state teams in preparation for individualized technical assistance (TA) and helping to facilitate pre- and post TA development.  
  • Author proposals and progress reports.
  • Monitors progress of cooperative agreement goals and adjusts activities according to evaluation results and the changing public health landscape.
  • Collaborates with staff across ASTHO relating to integrated programs and activities.
  • Represents ASTHO on national committees and partnerships.
  • Represents ASTHO at meetings and conferences related to injury prevention and other topics related specifically to the overdose crisis.  
  • Develops and maintains relevant materials and links for overdose related topics and policies on the ASTHO Web site and through several newsletters.
  • Assists with the evaluation of project activities and outcomes.
  • Tracks and analyzes federal and state legislative, regulatory, and judicial activities related to project issues.
  • Oversees or handles administrative tasks when necessary.
  • Continuously build content expertise in social and behavioral health, public health, and public health policy.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelorís degree with Masterís degree preferred in related field such as public health, public policy, or health care.
  • 2-3 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of state or local public health including injury prevention and substance misuse and addictions.
  • Experience writing, managing, and executing grant funded programs.
  • Project management and other organizational skills that can translate to leading the development overdose prevention resources for state and local health agencies.
  • Ability to lead collaboration among internal ASTHO staff, external partners, and funders. 
  • Ability to research, track and analyze appropriate issues and legislation at federal and state levels using abstract concepts.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including presentation skills.
  • Strong positive interpersonal and analytic skills.
  • Ability to travel within service area in the future should in-person events resume.
  • Ability to develop project measures of success, analyze progress, evaluate outcomes, and forecast needs.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, manage multiple priorities, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
