Senior Analyst, Chronic Disease Prevention

Department: CHRONIC DIS & HEALTH IMPROVEMENT
Location: Arlington, VA

Summary:  Assists the Director of Chronic Disease Prevention with project deliverables for federally funded projects important to State Health Officials in the areas of tobacco prevention and control, diabetes, and other related chronic diseases.

Principal Functions:

  • Assist in the management of project activities and deliverables, including the activities of outside consultants.
  • Develop in-depth reports, letters, issue briefs, case studies, policy statements, blog posts, infographics, newsletters, and articles for publication.
  • Serve as an information and policy resource on tobacco control and related chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and stroke for ASTHO members and internal staff.
  • Support ASTHO peer groups (Tobacco Control Network), network affiliates (Tobacco Issues Forum, E-Cigarette Workgroup, Breast Cancer Executive Leadership Council, etc.) and state health agencies through learning communities of practice on tobacco and chronic disease related projects with facilitation, agenda development, technical assistance, and training/meeting materials development.
  • Organize meetings for ASTHO peer groups, network affiliates and state health agencies through technical assistance and learning communities of practice on tobacco and chronic disease related projects.
  • Create capacity-building webinars, podcasts, and other virtual learning opportunities for ASTHO members and partners.
  • Manage recruitment and content development of learning communities and demonstration projects for state health department teams.
  • Evaluate impact of learning opportunities and workgroup meetings.
  • Assist in the writing of funding proposals and progress reports.
  • Update and write monthly and annual progress reports.
  • Provide staff support to relevant ASTHO policy committees.
  • Represent ASTHO at local, regional, federal and national meetings and serve as a liaison to state and federal tobacco control and chronic disease organizations.
  • Collaborate with ASTHO state health policy team on policy scans and legislative analyses.
  • Field, assess, and support opportunities for ASTHO to participate in sign-on letters and submit public comments on issues relevant to tobacco control and chronic disease.
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with national, federal, and multi-sector partners.
  • Organize and provide relevant materials and links for the ASTHO website.
  • Provide supervision/mentorship of a graduate level intern.
  • Functioning in a team environment.
  • Perform administrative tasks and other duties as assigned when necessary.

 

Qualifications:

  • MPH or related masterís degree candidate preferred; interest in public health related policies, health equity, social justice, health systems transformation, and chronic disease prevention interventions and policy practices.
  • At 3-5 years of relevant experience; knowledge of public health related policies and effective practices.
  • Expertise and knowledge of health equity public health strategies.
  • Demonstrable experience/interest in state or local public health
  • Experience/interest in chronic disease prevention, chronic disease management systems, and other related public health issues; or preference given towards candidates focused on chronic disease and health policy strongly preferred. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

  • Experience with MS Office applications and webinar platforms.
  • Ability to travel regularly.
  • Ability to develop project measures of success, analyze progress, evaluate outcomes, and forecast needs.
  • Ability to track and analyze related project issues and legislation at federal and state levels.
  • Ability to work with large networks and to represent ASTHO at meetings and conferences on project-related issues.
  • Ability to translate and disseminate information to various groups and audiences.
