Director - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Department: Organizational Performance and Staff Development
Location: Arlington, VA

Summary:  Ensures that ASTHO develops and implements proactive and integrative policies, strategies and practices that support an inclusive work culture, a broad base of diversity knowledge, and relevant innovation and learning.

Primary Functions:

  • Reviews and assists with developing Association employment policies and assessing benefits that reinforce diversity in the workplace.
  • Engages in accomplishing the TRHT recommendations and ensures continuation of actions and review.
  • Ensures diverse individuals have an opportunity to share perspectives in a safe and respectful work environment.
  • Functions as the Human Resources liaison and coordinator (if necessary) of the Employee Resource Groups (ERG), i.e., Resilience, LGBTQ, and Black Employees.
  • Assists with recruiting options to expand the advertising reach to diverse individuals.
  • Leads the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion staff committee.
  • Participates in diversity and equity networks and partnerships to remain current in the field.
  • Works with the Leadership Strategies staff to develop targeted trainings, tools, and resources to support supervisors in the management of diverse staff and teams.
  • Maintains active and current content in a Diversity and Equity resource center intranet section, with resources, tools, policies and directives, and procedures.  Makes certain those resources are easily accessible to employees.
  • Creates and maintains a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion orientation for new hire onboarding that includes the Truth and Racial Healing Transformation (TRHT actions and plans.
  • Works with relevant staff to revise and update all communication on our website, social media pages, job descriptions and internal documents to ensure we use non-discriminatory language.
  • Measures and forecasts relevant diversity metrics across the organization including those relating to the Operations Plan and the TRHT Plan.



  • Bachelorís degree in related field.
  • 4 years of experience specific to leading organized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion activities within an employment setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects associated with racial healing and anti-racism.
  • Knowledge of effective employee training programs along with tools for addressing bias.
  • Interest in working with a team to implement a Truth and Racial Healing Transformation plan and program.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Knowledge of employment and operational policies and their potential biases.
  • Willingness to engage with all areas of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Strong computer skills with an understanding and focus on measuring success in the D/E/I area.
