Intern, Data Analytics & Public Health Informatics

Department: PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATICS
Location: Arlington, VA

Internship Summary: The DAPHI Intern will work to support ASTHOís initiatives around a wide variety of public health topics with a focus on data analytics and public health informatics. The intern is responsible for developing deliverables and capacity building for health officials on federally funded projects in areas that include, but are not limited to, public health and healthcare data partnerships, health information exchange and health information technology. The intern will report to the Director of Data Analytics & Public Health Informatics.

Internís Job Description:

  • Conduct literature reviews and research to assist with writing deliverables and journal articles on topics like public health data moderinzation, population- or condition-specific data challenges and opportunities; innovative data strategies; health information exchange; and other data and health information technology concerns
  • Develop materials to assist staff in delivering capacity building and technical assistance to State and Territorial Health Officials (S/THOs) and their agenciesAssist with logistics and meeting notes for conference calls, webinars and virtual convenings.
  • Participate in internal meetings at ASTHO as relevant and meet with staff across the organization.
  • Assist with other tasks as needed.

Internís key outcomes:

  • Increase understanding on how territorial health officials and their agencies operationalize policies and programs.
  • Increase knowledge on public health needs and priorities of State and Territorial health agencies.
  • Identify the role of cross-sector collaborations in developing and implementing public health policies and programs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a cross-organizational team setting.
  • Develop oral and written communication skills critical to public health professionals.


Experience

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree or higher; experience or interest in working with health departments and/or on health-related issues is strongly preferred.

Required Skills

  • Excellent research, writing, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, in a team environment, and across different teams.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work in a virtual setting.

Preferred Skills
