Director, Promotion

Location: Arlington, VA

Summary: The director of promotion will develop and execute communications and promotional plans for ASTHO’s grant-funded public health programs and activities and other external-facing organizational needs. The director will work closely with program teams across ASTHO and the public relations and communications teams to develop and execute plans and will inform the development of the organization’s content strategy. This role will help position ASTHO as a key thought leader in the public health space.

Principal Functions:

  • Develop and execute communications plans for ASTHO publications, products, events, and campaigns, using ASTHO’s communications platforms and identifying and placing external opportunities.
  • Oversee email marketing campaigns, including governance, content, calendars, and production.
  • Manage and oversee branding for ASTHO, and events and activities.
  • Create and write promotional content.
  • Uses appropriate sources of organizational data, such as membership and other information, to inform development of communications plans.
  • Working with ASTHO’s web team, develops organic content strategy to drive increased web traffic, improve SEO, and leads from other websites.
  • Contribute to and support ASTHO’s website content strategy.
  • Collaborate with ASTHO’s program teams and across the public relations team to provide guidance on promotional strategy, tactics, and objectives; understands program issues and stays up-to-date on public health players and landscape.
  • Track, report, and share plan results and uses information to inform future promotional and strategy efforts; measures performance and effectiveness of products and campaigns.
  • Collaborate and serve as liaison with ASTHO’s performance effectiveness team to align on company objectives and capacity building product development.
  • Develop and build relationships with communications leads at ASTHO partners, funders, health departments, public information officers, and others.
  • Bring innovative ideas on promotional and marketing strategies to drive company ROI; stays up to date on digital marketing trends and resources.
  • Monitor health department, funder, and partner activity within social media, earned media, and strategy.
  • Collect data from across teams to produce monthly, yearly, and quarterly reports.


  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5 years’ experience, with marketing and promotions development background.
  • Experience working in a membership or non-profit organization preferred.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. Ability to present information clearly.
  • Skilled in proofreading and editing.
  • Ability to use discretion and judgment in dealing with confidential, sensitive, and controversial issues.
  • Ability to promptly manage multiple priorities and complete assigned tasks.
  • Ability to develop collaborative networks both internal and external to the organization and represent the organization at meetings and conferences as requested.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively in a team environment with all levels of professional, technical, and administrative staff and toward shared objectives.
  • Solid computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite, database, and other software applications.
